Your Cat’s Noticing More Than You Think (Even That Wall Art)

by Wanghal 29 May 2025

We spend hours curating the perfect gallery walls, picking just the right frame, and selecting art that speaks to us. But what about our cats? Do they notice the new canvas we just hung above the couch—especially if it’s a portrait of them? It might seem like a stretch, but many cat owners have caught their feline friends staring at, lounging near, or even swatting at pictures on the wall. So, do cats actually care about what's hanging up there?

1. What Science Says About Feline Awareness

Cats are highly aware of their surroundings, but their perception of the world differs from ours. Their eyesight is better attuned to motion than detail, and their color perception is limited compared to humans. They see the world in muted tones, mostly blues and yellows, and can miss reds and greens entirely.

More importantly, cats don’t have self-recognition the way humans or even some animals like great apes or dolphins do. This means when they see a reflection or an image—even of themselves—they likely don’t recognize it as "me." However, they are excellent at detecting changes in their environment. If something new appears on a wall they frequent, they'll likely notice it simply because it's different.

2. Do Cats React to Wall Art or Pet Portraits?

A quick scroll through social media will show plenty of cats reacting to artwork. Some stare for minutes, others jump at a painting with big eyes or animal shapes. There are also adorable videos of cats sitting proudly below their custom portraits, as if they know it’s meant for them.

While cats probably don’t realize a painting is a representation of themselves, they may respond to elements like eyes, movement (in animations), or even their owner's attention toward the artwork. If their human is interested in the painting, the cat might be curious too.

3. What Cats Do Notice at Home

Cats are creatures of habit and territory. They notice subtle changes: a moved plant, a new pillow, or a different smell. So yes, a newly hung painting might be inspected. They’re especially responsive to things that shine, reflect light, or sway in the breeze—features that some wall decor may include.

They’re also incredibly in tune with their owners’ behaviors. If you spend a lot of time near a portrait, looking at it or photographing it, your cat may investigate out of curiosity or affection.

4. Why Pet Portraits Still Matter (Even If Your Cat Doesn’t Notice)

Let’s be honest: pet portraits are more for us than for them. They help us celebrate the deep connection we share with our pets and keep their presence alive in our space. Even if your cat doesn't consciously acknowledge their portrait, it becomes a part of their territory and environment.

Moreover, these portraits bring emotional value, joy, and a sense of pride. They are reminders of the love we feel for our animals—and for many of us, that's more than enough reason to hang them proudly.

5. Fun Ways to Observe Your Cat’s Reaction

  • Want to see if your cat cares about what's on the wall? Try these:
  • Place their portrait near their favorite nap spot and observe any changes in behavior.
  • Record their reaction the first time they see the artwork.
  • Experiment with different image types: realistic, abstract, colorful.
  • Try a mirror test: does your cat react to their reflection more than to a portrait?

Cats may not understand or appreciate art the way humans do, but they definitely notice when something changes in their world. Whether or not they recognize themselves in a portrait, what truly matters is the bond you share. A pet portrait is a celebration of that connection—and even if your cat is indifferent, you’ll always know its meaning.

And who knows? Maybe one day, your cat will pick the sunny spot right under their own face on the wall. Coincidence? Maybe. But it still makes a great photo.
